Colas Rail to upgrade Cairo Metro line

In order to upgrading the first line of the Greater Cairo Metro, a consortium led by French Colas Rail that is a group, comprising Colas Rail, Orascom Construction and Hitachi, has concluded a contract with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels to carry out the works, which include modernising signals, communications and central control, as well as electromechanical, electrical, overhead network and track works.

With intention of ensuring the quality and continuity of service on the metro line, this upgrade will decrease maintenance and operating costs.

Additionally, the modernisation of the line systems, 23 trains were being refurbished and 55 new air-conditioned trains introduced, are the contents of this plan as Deputy prime minister for industrial development, minister of industry and transport Kamel El Wazir said.  Being inaugurated in 1987, this 44km line was the first metro line in Africa and the Middle East. It carries 1.5 million passengers a day.
