Focus of BTS September Evening Lecture is Los Angeles Metro Tunneling

The Los Angeles Metro Tunnelling , involving Past, Present and Future, is due to be concentration of this month’s British Tunnelling Society evening lecture.

In order to servesing Los Angeles County, California, the current LA Metro urban rail transit system inaugurated in 1990, whereas Los Angles had an extensive historic rail transit system through the 1960s,  and following incremental expansion now this line comprises four light rail and two heavy rail transit lines serving over 100 stations and some 35 km constructed in tunnels.

Now construction process of 15 km of tunnels and 7 underground stations for the Westside Purple (D) Line Extension on the Westside of Los Angeles has been completed.  The ongoing program of countywide transportation improvements also includes more tunnels and underground stations.

Cnstruction in a dense urban environment, existing underground infrastructure, earthquakes, active faults, oil wells, methane as well as hydrogen sulphide gases in the ground, are the tunneling challenges in the path of this project.

The presenters for the evening are:

  • Matthew Crow – Deputy Executive Officer, Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority
  • Amanda Elioff – Sr. Vice President, WSP USA, Los Angeles

In order to presenting the engineering strategies and details to enable the safe efficient construction and then operation of these underground works, they are going to discuss these challenges over time.
