Dubai Municipality has highlighted the Deep Tunnel Drainage Project, a major stormwater infrastructure development designed to improve drainage capacity and strengthen the emirate’s resilience to extreme weather conditions.
The 10.3km-long tunnel has an internal diameter of 10m and runs at depths of between 40m and 60m below ground. It serves a catchment area of up to 500 sq km, helping improve stormwater drainage across key areas of Dubai.
The project includes an advanced pumping system comprising four main pumps with a reported combined capacity of 36 cubic metres per second.
Areas benefiting from the drainage system include Jebel Ali, the Expo 2020 area, Dubai South’s residential district and Al Maktoum International Airport City.
Dubai Municipality said the project represents a significant investment in sustainable infrastructure, supporting the emirate’s efforts to adapt to changing weather conditions and accommodate continued urban development.
The project forms part of Dubai’s wider strategy to modernise its stormwater drainage network, improve infrastructure performance and strengthen the city’s preparedness for future climate-related challenges.
