Opening tender for Grand Taipa Tunnel and southern link construction by Macau

The scheduled date for commencing construction of the Taipa Grande Tunnel, which is a 600m link connecting the Macau Bridge to Cotai, is Q2 2025 and according to Macau’s Direcção dos Serviços de Obras Públicas (DSOP) announcement, the tender process for the design and construction of the Grand Taipa Tunnel and its southern link is now officially open.

The determined deadline for construction firms interested in the project for submiting their proposals is11 December,as per the tender notice issued by the public works department.

Including two sections, the development of the Taipa Grande Tunnel project’s first section covers the main tunnel and its southern link, whereas passing the initial qualification stage and currently is open for proposal submissions and the second section is due to concentrate on building the northern link, which involves an 890m viaduct connecting the tunnel to the Macau Bridge, reported the Macau Daily Times.

Second quarter of 2025, is the planned date for starting construction of the Taipa Grande Tunnel. While connecting the Macau Bridge to Cotai, the 600m tunnel is going to provide an alternative route that avoids the Taipa Ferry Terminal and Macau International Airport.

The number of pre-qualified companies that have been invited to submit their bids for the first section of the project is five and in order to minimising traffic disruption during construction, the DSOP has specified that these companies must provide comprehensive execution plans detailing the safety measures and strategies.

Constructing of a new flyover that will link the border-crossing Macau Bridge to the northern entrance of the Taipa Grande Tunnel is the content of the second section.

Involving four lanes in each direction, this elevated roadway is slated to develop almost 890m and will be built over parklands and will reach a maximum height of 23m above the light rail line.

Considering that the technical requirements and the potential impact on traffic flow is important, DSOP has requested that bidders provide thorough execution plans to guarantee the project’s accuracy and safety.

Given that the elevated structure presents several engineering challenges, any missteps could have significant consequences for traffic management and safety.
