North End Connectors, a consortium comprising Aecon, FCC Construcción and Ghella, is responsible for constructing the project’s twin 6.3km tunnels.
With the launch shaft excavation completed in July, crews are now assembling the first TBM and installing the equipment and support systems required for tunnelling operations.
The Yonge North Subway Extension will extend Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Line 1 approximately 8km north, bringing rapid transit service to communities in Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill.
Once both machines are assembled and launched, they will excavate southwards from the launch shaft towards Finch Station. Each TBM will construct one of the twin tunnels, connecting the extension to the existing Line 1 subway service.
The extension is expected to accommodate more than 94,000 additional transit rides each day and reduce travel times by up to 22 minutes, improving connections across the Greater Toronto Area.
