Starting Doha Stormwater Works

Ashghal Construction Stormwater Drainage Tunnel - Doha

As a part of the Stormwater Drainage Program Project, Phase Three (Southern Doha Areas), construction process has commenced on a stormwater drainage tunnel in Doha.

The tunnel, which is designed to protect vital assets, involves the Hamad Hospital Tunnel and government facilities such as the Ministry of the Interior, the Shura Council, and the Fire Station Museum.

Using a TBM this rainwater drainage tunnel that will be almost 1.7km long, and a 1400mm diameter, is due to be dug at depths of 7-10m beneath ground level.

The responsibility of advancing this project is up to Contractor Hamad Bin Khalid Construction Company and they are going to undertake the works in areas with high traffic flows, such as the intersection of Mohammed bin Thani Street and Ahmed Bin Ali Street which carries 9,500 to 11,400 vehicles per hour.

According to Khaled Al-Khayareen, director of the Drainage Networks Projects Department at public works authority Ashghal: “In line with the goals of sustainable development and the Qatar National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change, the project would provide a long-term solution to reduce rainwater accumulation rather than relying on the use of temporary pumps during the rainy season.”

The scheduled date for completion of this project is the fourth quarter of this year.
