Cyberattack Reported at Fehmarnbelt Tunnel Contractor

Fehmarnbelt tunnel cyberattack

Femern A/S, the project owner, said on 13 October that FLC had informed it of the incident and that discussions with the contractor were ongoing.

Jens Villemoes, press director at Sund & Bælt, the parent company of Femern A/S, said that no further information was available at the time of the announcement.

Femern A/S has not confirmed whether the incident affected construction systems, project data or operational equipment. No disruption to construction has been confirmed.

FLC responsible for main tunnel works

FLC is responsible for constructing the tunnel element factory, the immersed tunnel, and the portals and ramps on both sides of the Fehmarnbelt.

The consortium comprises VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Per Aarsleff, Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, Max Bögl Stiftung, CFE, Solétanche Bachy International, BAM Infra and BAM International.

Femern A/S said it remains in dialogue with FLC regarding the cybersecurity incident. Further details about its cause, scope and potential consequences have not been disclosed.

Immersion works progress on 18km link

The Fehmarnbelt fixed link will connect Rødbyhavn in Denmark with Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn. At approximately 18km, it is designed to become the world’s longest immersed road and rail tunnel.

The tunnel will comprise 79 standard elements and 10 shorter special elements. Each standard element is approximately 217m long and weighs more than 73,500 tonnes before immersion.

On 28 September, Femern A/S reported that the fourth standard element had been installed, bringing the completed immersed section to almost 900m.

The elements are transported from the purpose-built factory and work harbour at Rødbyhavn before being lowered into position in the prepared tunnel trench.

The cybersecurity incident comes as the project continues its transition through the immersion phase. Its effect, if any, on the construction programme remains unclear.
