Excavating Lot 1A Battipaglia–Romagnano of the new railway line in Italy, the two latest TBMs for the Salerno–Reggio Calabria High-Speed Line has been named as Leucosia and Ligea by public.
According to Greek mythology, Leucosia and Ligea were sirens that dwelled along the shores of the Bay of Salerno, whereas Leucosia means the white one or the radiant one, while Ligea means clear-voiced or melodious.
While digging of over than 800m-long Serra Lunga tunnel will be up to one of the two 13.46m-diameter TBMs, then it is due to continue with the 250m-long Acerra tunnel and the Petrolla tunnel, which will be more than 1.2km. Also the other machine is going to bore the Piano Grasso tunnel, more than 2.2km long, followed by the Contursi tunnel, which will be over 1.5km.
Their next destination will be joining to TBM Partenope, that was commissioned in February this year and is excavating the Saginara tunnel.
