The Tram Ticino consortium that involves Afry, Pini and Lombardi, has concluded the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel in Switzerland, whereas the contract was granted to this team by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese SA.
Connecting the city centre with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys, reducing travel time as well as providing sustainable transport, will be the advantages of the Tram-Treno network in Lugano. The redesign of the network is expected to increase capacity from 7,500 passengers per day today to 20,000 and the scheduled date for its inauguration is 2035.
Linking the new network with regional and national transport, the underground station Lugano – Railway Station SBB, is located at 40m beneath the new underpass and will serve as an intermodal hub for trams, trains, the railway network and city buses.
According to Marcel Winter, country manager of Afry in Switzerland: “We are pleased to be able to use our expertise to bring this complex inner-city project from the planning stage to life, thus contributing to a sustainable transport solution.”
