Chinese Pumped Hydro Project – Completing second inclined shaft by TBM

In order to completing the full connection of two key water diversion inclined shafts, setting a new mechanised construction record in China’s pumped storage power station sector, as well as successfully applying a new mechanised full-section excavation model for inclined shafts, the No. 2 diversion shaft on the Luoning Pumped Storage Power Station was broken through by China’s first domestically produced large-diameter, large-inclination inclined shaft TBM.

Being developed by CREC’s subsidiary China Railway Engineering Equipment Group, State Grid Xinyuan Luoning Company, and Sinohydro Bureau 6, TBM Yongning completed the No. 2 shaft by excavating upwards at an angle of 38.742 degrees and bored 860m of the 873m length.

The date of commencing the digging process by this TBM was April 25, whereas its advance was 22.75m per day and 332m per month, setting a record for inclined shaft TBM tunneling in China.

TBM Yongning broke through on the No. 1 inclined diversion shaft in January this year.

As the largest pumped storage power station under construction in central China, Luoning Pumped Storage Power Station in Henan province has a total installed capacity of 1.4 million kW. With the aim of creating a new approach for the construction of pumped storage power stations in China, this project involves optimising the upper inclined shaft, the middle adit and the lower inclined shaft into a primary inclined shaft.
