Hammarby Canal Project – Breakthrough In Stockholm

Considering that a few days ago Itinera attained landmark in the Arenastaden, Södra Hagalund assignment, it has successfully achieved same milestone in the tunnel in the Hammarby Canal project, where it is currently working on for the extension of the Swedish capital’s metro system.

Including construction of a new section belonging to the Blue Line called the Hammarby Canal, that is the only one to be beneath water level, this project’s value is almost €90 million.

Construction of the Hammarby Canal station, which is placed at a depth of 40 meters, and three rock tunnel sections of with a total length of around 1,100 meters, is the main intention of this scheme.

According to Frida Hesselgren – Hammarby Canal Project Manager: “After two years of tunnel excavation, we have reached this important milestone. It has been an exciting challenge to build a station in rock underwater; we have had very poor rock quality in several zones under the canal.”

He also added: “From the northern ticket hall, which is located in a park in central Stockholm, we will continue with a shorter escalator shaft into the basement of an existing multi-story building and build the northern entrance and a new large bomb shelter there. We’re now now approaching the most technically complicated task of this contract with meticulous production planning.”
