Chennai Metro Rail Project – Third Terratec TBM Launches

In order to advance the Chennai Metro Rail project and constructing Phase 2 – Corridor 3, Package TU01 from Venugopal Nagar Station to Kellys Station, the third of five Terratec EPBMs has been commissioned and Tata Projects Ltd is using the 6.61m diameter TBMs, whereas the work also involves building of 9km of twin tunnels.

Also five of the seven TBMs required for this package, has been provided by Terratec and the date of starting up first of the machines, which is TBM S96, was October last year, while the Madhavaran High Rod is its digging direction along with TBM S97.

Commencing the excavating process from the same shaft, TBM S98 is moving towards Venugopal Nagar (of Line-5) to Kellys Station and TBM S99 is being assembled on site.

In Pune, the factory acceptance test (FAT) of the fifth machine, S81B, has been passed, whereas this refurbished machine was previously used to build a 2.14km tunnel between Swargate and Budhwar Peth stations for Pune Metro Phase 1 project’s 16.6km Purple Line.

Comprising of construction of diaphragm walls and launch and retrieval shafts at Madhavaram Milk Colony Station, Murari Hospital Station, Ayanavaram Station as well as Purasaiwakkam High Road Station, the Chennai Metro Project Phase 2 – Corridor 3, Package TU01 has a main challenge that is tunneling beneath historical structures in built-up areas.
