Irish Water Project – Tunneling is Undergoing

Athlone - Ireland

While the tunneling process have commenced on the wastewater upgrade in Athlone, in Co Westmeath, Ireland, after completion the addition of 2.8km of new sewers will improve water quality in the River Shannon and decrease the risk of sewer flooding to homes and businesses.

According Eunan Canavan, portfolio manager at Uisce Éireann (formerly Irish Water): “The €114m investment was a landmark project for Athlone. The project itself is one of the largest capital investments by Uisce Éireann to date and will bring numerous benefits to the local community and environment. It is a massive undertaking for us and our delivery partners, and today marks another major milestone as tunneling works are now under way, which takes us one step closer to ensuring that wastewater is adequately treated and meets appropriate standards before being safely discharged to the environment.”
