Scheldt Tunnel – First segment submersed

Through the North Sea, the eight elements for the immersed tunnel have been towed over a 111km journey from Zeebrugge to the Scheldt river during the past month.

The tunnel sections with 160m length, 42m width and 10m height, and weigh almost 60,000 tonnes, were built in a specially built construction dock in Zeebrugge.

As a ring road around Antwerp designed to improve links to the city and its port, the 1.8km-long Scheldt Tunnel is part of the Oosterweel Link.

The responsibility of delivering this tunnel is up to the TM Cotu consortium comprising Besix, Stadsbader Contractors, Deme, and Jan De Nul.

Sightseers watched the elements at points on their sea journey, and TM Cotu and client Lantis are expecting today’s event also to attract interest.

The submersion of the first tunnel segment can be followed online here.
