In order to advancing the construction of the T2 section of Rome’s Metro Line C, Metro C Consortium, led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori, has signed a contract worth approximately €2bn.
Considering that the new stretch of the line is due to pass under the Tiber River in an area of exceptional archaeological and urban importance, the contract involves one of the most complex engineering challenges in the city as
Thr scheduled date for commencing construction works is January 2026 following approval of executive design.
Stretching 4km between the Venezia Station and Clodio/Mazzini, the T2 section will add four new stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (interconnected with Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini. While Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro are going to be archaeological stations, designed to celebrate the city’s heritage and integrate it with the urban setting, San Pietro Station, set within the gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo, will be the deepest and most visually striking, descending 48m underground. Its design will complement the new layout of the surrounding square while respecting the adjacent monumental structures.
Chiesa Nuova Station will be located beneath the square of the same name, near the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and the Oratorio dei Filippini.
Constructing diaphragms up to almost 90m deep is one of the most technically challenging aspects of the project and it will involve using cutting-edge technology already successfully tested during the construction of the Venezia Station. The line will also pass 25m beneath the Tiber.
While the final testing phase of the San Giovanni–Colosseo/Fori Imperiali section of Line C is up to Webuild, delivery of the archaeological stations Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali has been scheduled for September. Line C is slated to be 26km long and include 29 stations following completion and its 22 stations are already operational. It will link the south-eastern suburbs of Rome to the north-west.
