Bangkok Flood Prevention Project – Two TERRATEC EPBMS are Ready

TERRATEC EPBM ready for Bangkok flood prevention project

The Khlong Prem Prachakorn Drainage Tunnel Project will host two new TERRATEC TBMs for the Department of Drainage and Sewage Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in Thailand.

Following its successful Factory Acceptance Test in November 2022, the new TERRATEC Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM) with 6.49m diameter was destined for the Khlong Prem Prachakorn Drainage Tunnel Project in Bangkok, Thailand. With attendance of the representatives of Department of Drainage and Sewerage BMA and contractor Italian Thai-Nawarat Joint Venture, this event was held online. Meanwhile, Jan. 2023 is the determined date for second Factory Acceptance Test of another EPBM.

Stretching from Klong Bang Bua to the Chao Phraya River, the construction process of a water draining tunnel with is 13.3km length and 5.7m-width, is due to be up to these two new TBMs. Additionally, construction of a water pumping station along with a water draining building and four water receiving buildings will also be the other operations. In order to accommodating the alignment requirements of the project, the TERRATEC machines are designed with active-type articulation that can accommodate the minimum radius curve of 50m and 25m. Considering soft, medium, stiff sandy clay & sand geology along the tunnel alignments, the TBM’s soft ground cutterhead will feature a flat spoke type with copy cutters, whereas Universal reinforced concrete segments (5 + 1), which are traditionally reinforced and also have 300mm thick by 1400m wide, are going to be installed as the machine advances.

The battery locomotives are slated to be used in order to muck removal, segment transport and supply of consumables via rail-bound equipment. Improving water management in Thai capital, Bangkok from floods when it rains heavily, is the aim of this project and it is due to build a water pumping station and water draining buildings, as well as four water receiving buildings and a water draining tunnel with 5.7 m diameter and 13.4 km in length will be constructed. In order to ensuring optimum performance and successful project completion, machine operation will be assisted at all times by TERRATEC’s highly-experienced Field Service staff, providing quality after-sales support.

Once it completed its factory acceptance test successfully, TBM S101 has been delivered in Dec 2022, while the second TBM S100 will be shipped to Thailand and arrive in early 2023. Being commissioned in the middle of 2023, the two TBMs are going to then be transported to the project site.

The well-established regional base of the TERRATEC is located in Thailand, and it has sold its first machine in the country more than ten years ago for the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Blue Line Extension Project. As country’s leading TBM supplier, TERRATEC outstands in tailor-made robust TBM design, prompt onsite assistance, readily available stock of TBM spares and specialized TBM support throughout the tunneling operation.
