The Federal Council Approved Switzerland – PoLuMe Project

A2 Motorway

Being stretched from Lugano to Mendrisio (PoLuMe), the A2 motorway project’s upgrading was ratified by the Federal Council in its meeting on the 16th December 2022. While the whole of determined budget for this project is EUR1.73 bn (CHF1.7 bn), the Canton Ticino is due to contribute further costs of EUR85.32 million (CHF84 million).

As a part of the National Roads Strategic Development Program, the PoLuMe project intends to adjust the motorway capacity to demand without developing the road area. Meanwhile, inauguration of the emergency lane to traffic during peak hours, will enable this issue.

Including three tunnels without an emergency lane, this section of the A2 there will significantly require construction of a new tunnel between Bissone and Maroggia, as well as expand the San Salvatore (1728 m, 1728 m) and Gentilino (580 m, 580 m) tunnels. In order to facilitating access to the motorway for users, thus relieving the cantonal and municipal roads of the region, the project also envisages the construction of a junction in Grancia and a junction in Val Mara.

As an indication of the first stage of the planning process of the work, the approval of the general project establishes the fundamental parameters, whereas currently the latter is going to be specified in the executive project which will then be published.

Considering the outcome of the successive phases of approval of the plans and on the degree of priority assigned to the project by the Parliament in the framework of National Roads Strategic Development Program, the implementation times will be determined. The scheduled date for commencing the works is 2030, in accordance with current forecasts, and it will continue for around 12 years.
