Traylor-Shea JV Awarded RiverRenew Tunnel Project Contract

The Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) Board awarded the $454.4 million design and construction contract of the RiverRenew Tunnel System Project to Taylor-Shea Join Venture earlier during a board meeting November 17th. A step toward delivering cleaner, healthier waterways to Alexandria by July 2025 under the Virginia law passed in 2017. For this purpose, since 2018, has Alexandria sought to realize the RiverRenew Tunnel.

Karen Pallansch, AlexRenew CEO, stated that “AlexRenew is excited to partner with Traylor-Shea to improve the health and quality of Alexandria’s waterways on RiverRenew, the largest infrastructure project in the City of Alexandria’s history.”

To build the proposed 3.2km long x 3.9m.dia tunnel, Tunnel Boring Machines will be put into operation in addition to the use of shafts. The tunnel is represented as a solution to reduce sewage by 500milion liters yearly from the Potomac River, Hunting Creek, and Hooffs Run.

“Despite a government shutdown, an ongoing pandemic, and other hurdles, RiverRenew is on track to meet its incredibly aggressive completion timetable. AlexRenew will continue to fulfill our vital mission to clean wastewater, working collaboratively with our community to solve our environmental challenges proactively and through effective local, long-term investments,” declared Pallansch.
