Launching marine tunneling in Western Australia

The excavating process of a 2.5km intake tunnel and a 4km outfall tunnel beneath the seabed, is undergoing by two TBMs, Karli, named after the Whadjuk Noongar word for boomerang, and Mary, named after a pioneering alchemist.

The responsibility of delivering the project near Perth is up to Alkimos SeaWater Alliance, an alliance of Water Corporation, Acciona and Jacobs Group Australia which is also aresponsible for the design, build and operation of the plant.

The date of commencing construction process was mid-2024, whereas the tunnel drives are expected to be completed late next year and the scheduled date for launching the plant is 2028.

With the aim of securing drinking water to millions of western Australians, Alkimos is part of Water Corporation program and works valued at AU$2.8bn.
