By The State of West Virginia confirmed that the Hawk’s Nest Tunnel inspection, constructed in 1930, will commence soon.
The water diversion system (stretching for 5km) was designed to divert water from the New River through the Gauley Mountain to the Electro Metallurgical Company.
Martin Cherniack, a medical doctor, claimed that during the 1930s, thousands of laborers mining at Gauley Mountain died due to Silica dust and hazardous work conditions.
Brookfield Renewable, the owner of the Hawks Nest Dam, declared on September 8th, the tunnel will undergo an initial inspection to ascertain the future actions. Beforehand, the water level will be lowered to allow a better examination of the Hawk’s dam.
