Kanpur Metro’s 1st Underground Section’s Two TBMs is Delivered by TERRATEC

TERRATEC EPB TBM for Kanpur MRTS Project

In order to construct the Corridor-1 of Kanpur MRTS Project (KNPCC-05) in India, two Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines with 6.52m diameter have been delivered to Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) by TERRATEC.

The Gulermak-Sam India JV is going to use the intended TBMs for advancing tunneling works on Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project’s with 32.4 km length underground section that is the first underground tunneling package (KNPCC-05) of this project is 8.6km long.

Once Factory Acceptance Tests at TERRATEC’s facilities passed successfully, the TBMs are due to be carried to Kanpur and reassembled for operating in the package of the 23.8 km Orange Line-1 linking IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, is 3619 meters long and includes four stations.

In September 2020 this contract was granted to Gulermak-Sam India JV, while it comprises of the building process of the four new underground stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj each 215 meters long (see map below).

Although the delivery location of first machine will be the Bada chauraha station site in early 2022, the scheduled date for arrival of second TBM on-site is March.The twin 989.5m stretch of Naya Ganj is the determined path for starting up the machines initially, where they are going to dig through local geology consisting of soil, clay, silt and sandy silt.
