BTS Conference – ITA President will be the Keynote Speaker

Being held in London on October 11-12, the BTS Conference and Exhibition will host newly-elected ITA president Arnold Dix as the keynote speaker.

While the speech topic of Dix, who was opted at WTC 2022 in Copenhagen this month, will be “Down to the next level – A Role for the UN Global Compact for the Underground Sector?”, Other keynote speakers are Antonia Cornaro, underground space expert at Amberg Engineering, and co-chair of ITACUS, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association’s Committee on Underground Space; and John Davis, senior partner at Geotechnical Consulting Group LLP, and Antony Drake, technical director at Mott MacDonald.

The alternative and innovative uses of underground space is due to be the main point of Cornaro’s lecture, whereas Davis and Drake will look at the soon to be published CIRIA GBR Good Practice Guide.

Including the decommissioning, disposal facilities and Muon tomography for safety and safeguarding in nuclear waste geological repositories, the intended two-day conference program also covers a session entitled “The nuclear future”.

Considering as a new framework for tunnel lining design, discuss about the multi-layer lining design, is slated to be the speech topic of Dr Jiang Su, Ramboll technical director, tunnels and underground space during a session on SCL innovation.

Additionally, Dr Karl Gunnar Holter, of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, will look at permanent waterproof sprayed concrete lining and outline the findings from the SUPERCON research project, while the speak subject for Dr Mehdi Serati, School of Civil Engineering, University of Queensland will be synthetic glass aggregates in shotcrete production; and Dr Chris Peaston, director, Peaston Concrete Consultancy Ltd and Stuart Manning, technical director, Shotcrete Services Ltd is due to look at maximizing the potential for carbon reduction.

Involving two speakers from the HS2 project, a UK focus session will be presented by BBV JV project director, tunnels Gullaume Lefrere, and they will give an overview of HS2 tunneling activities at Long Itchington Wood, while a second presentation is going to look at the challenges and advancement on the HS2 SCS JV tunnels.

Moreover, presentation about the outline progress and insights into the construction of London Power Tunnels 2 tunnels and shafts, will be given by Ben Muncey, senior project manager National Grid, and Raj Kundan, technical manager Hochtief Murphy JV.

Also closing of the UK session will be done after presenting an update on TunnelSkills by TunnelSkills chair Neil Hancox.

By host of the QEII Conference Centre in London, the BTS meeting, which’s concentration is on “The BTS/ICE specification 4th edition. Collaborating for sustainability”, is going to be held on the evening of October 11, followed by a drinks reception, while this event also includes an exhibition of nearly 50 companies.

Delegate registration for the conference and drinks reception is £175 for BTS members and £225 for non-members. The exhibition is free to attend.
