NZ tunnels to be fast-tracked

In order to advancing the country’s Roads of National Significance (RoNS) program, at a joint press conference, prime minister Christopher Luxon and transport minister Chris Bishop announced NZ$1.2bn (US$690m) in funding for the planning, early works and property acquisition, whereas it includes the two tunnels for Wellington, a second Mt Victoria Tunnel and a second Terrace Tunnel, which takes SH1 through the city.

According to Luxon: “The projects would receive fast-track approval by cutting the red tape that had stymied many of New Zealand’s infrastructure projects. We need to act now to future-proof the country’s infrastructure.”

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has endorsed investment cases for the road projects,17 in total, and the funding has been approved.

The new Mt Victoria road tunnel will include a 3.6m-wde walking and cycling path.
