Work continues on Middle East’s first immersed tunnel

The positioning of the fourth concrete segment for the Middle East’s immersed tunnel is under way in Iraq.

Linking Al Faw Grand Port with an international highway, the Basra Tunnel being built at Al Faw Grant Port for the General Company of Ports and is being positioned under the Khor Al-Zubair Channel, whereas running beneath the Shatt al-Arab waterway,

According to the company’s director-general, Dr Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi: “Submerging the fourth segment completed approximately 693m of the tunnel’s total length, including the Um Qasr approach, marking significant progress in the project’s execution timeline.”

The number of segments of the completed tunnel will be 10 segments.

As part of a strategic plan to develop Iraq’s transport infrastructure and enhance its capacity for international trade movements, the Basra Tunnel is one of five major engineering projects at Al Faw Grand Port.
