The contract covers the most complex section of the project to improve transport links across Genoa and strengthen connections between the city and its port, one of the Mediterranean’s major logistics hubs. Webuild was awarded the contract for the port-area works in July.
4.2km route to pass beneath Genoa port
The overall route will extend approximately 4.2km, including more than 3km of twin tunnels carrying traffic in opposite directions.
The alignment will connect San Benigno in western Genoa with Viale Brigate Partigiane in the Foce district. It will pass beneath the port basin at a depth exceeding 40m before rising beneath the Carignano hill.
The project is designed to improve road connectivity around the port and ease movement between Genoa’s urban areas and its maritime logistics infrastructure.
16m-diameter TBM to excavate main tunnels
Webuild will use a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of approximately 16m to excavate the main tunnel section. The machine is among the largest TBMs planned for deployment in Italy.
Excavation beneath the port basin and densely developed urban areas presents significant engineering challenges, making this one of the country’s most complex underground road infrastructure projects.
The completed tunnel is intended to improve traffic flows and provide a new route beneath the port and surrounding urban areas.
Preparatory works advance under Lot A
Meanwhile, work on Lot A, which began in 2024, is approaching completion, according to Carlo De Simone, deputy commissioner for the reconstruction of Genoa.
The first lot includes demolition and site preparation, a 410m railway tunnel, a new port road network and the Fosso San Bartolomeo floodway.
Together, the works form part of a wider programme to upgrade Genoa’s transport infrastructure and improve access to one of Italy’s most important ports.
