Being launched by Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), public consultation has opened for Enbridge Energy’s proposed tunnel project beneath the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan and it elates to Enbridge Energy’s permit application for surface facilities associated with the proposed Line 5 tunnel project.
The determined time duration for public notice is from July 16 to August 29, 2025.
The intention of constructing this tunnel is to house a proposed replacement for the more than 70-year-old Line 5 light crude oil and natural gas pipelines currently lying on the lakebed. The Straits of Mackinac links the Great Lakes of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
The US Army Corps of Engineers awarded national energy emergency status for the proposed 5.8km tunnel in April.
