Rome’s Metro C Line – Completing first phase of Venezia Station walls

The first phase for Venezia Station’s walls on Rome’s Metro C Line has been completed by a Webuild-led consortium.

With the aim of constructing the panels for the perimeter walls of the underground box structure inside which the station will be built, Webuild and Vianini Lavori dug to depths of 85m using a large hydro-milling machine. The hydro-milling machine is 24.5m high and weighs 185 tons.

Following forming the box structure, the area in which the station is due to be built will be excavated that is going to decrease the impact on the surface, preserving the archaeological findings. The scheduled time duration for completing the first 124 diaphragms of the hydro-milling machine is over a year, whereas a total of 352 underground panels, including 170 diaphragms, will be installed for all three excavation phases.

The current location of hydro-milling machine is Via dei Fori Imperiali, directly beneath the Vittoriano, where archaeological excavation and the first section of the roof slab will be carried out in the autumn. Enabling construction of the remaining diaphragms of the station’s box structure, this will allow road traffic to return to normal in the square on the Palazzo Venezia side.

Including six underground levels, and providing direct access to some of Rome’s major cultural sites, such as Palazzo Venezia, the Vittoriano and Fori Imperiali, Venezia Station is one of Europe’s deepest.

As an archaeological station, the first level of this station will be dedicated to a museum of artefacts unearthed during the excavations.

Linking the suburbs to the city centre, from Pantano Station, the last stop on the south-eastern side, to Clodio/Mazzini, Rome’s Metro Line C crosses the city from south-east to the south-west. While this 26km line, 17km underground and 9km above ground, is due to have 29 stations, its 19km section from Pantano to San Giovanni has been completed.
