Commissioning new Kent tunnel’s tender

In order to advancing the tunnel engineering and construction works near the Bluewater Shopping Centre, Kent County Council has launched a tender.

Considering that the Fastrack Bean Road Tunnel will be 75m-long, technically it is going to be an underpass because of its short length, and will be a new tunnel through the chalk spine beneath the Bean Road between Whitecliffe (former Eastern Quarry) and Bluewater Shopping Centre.

Linking the shopping centre to the new Whitecliffe housing development and Ebbsfleet International Railway Station, this tunnel is due to form part of the Fastrack bus rapid transit system within Kent Thameside.

Involving a 3.5m-wide bi-directional Fastrack busway that connects Whitecliffe and Bluewater, this project will comprises of a combined footway / cycleway and footway linking the Whitecliffe and Bluewater as part of the Ebbsfleet Garden City green corridor network.

While the determined value for this project is £25.5m, its construction cost budget will be almost £20.43m.
