Semmering Base Tunnel Project – First bore completed

While a consortium of Implenia, Hochtief and Thyssen Schachtbau made the breakthrough on the Gloggnitz Track 1 / Göstritz Ost Track 1, one bore of the Semmering Base Tunnel has been completed on September 12.

With around 7.4km-long north-eastern section, construction of Lot 1.1 of the Gloggnitz Tunnel is up to this group, whereas the breakthrough means one track of the 27.3km-long Semmering Base Tunnel is now passable.

The extremely changeable geology under the most difficult geotechnical conditions with large water inflows and pressures of up to 20 bar, as well as radial deformations of up to 2m, are the conditions of the tunneling work as Implenia said in a LinkedIn post.

Including 14 drives, the Semmering Base Tunnel being built from five locations for the Austrian Federal Railway. Also connection of the two federal states of Lower Austria and Styria will be up to the twin-tube railway tunnel between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag and the scheduled date for its inauguration is 2030.

The contract with €176m value includes telecommunications, electrical equipment with high-voltage systems, distribution boards, lighting, and air-conditioning, and was awarded to Porr Group and Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group in June 2024.
