As part of the team building Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, the world’s first all-women TBM crew is now under way.
Leding of the crew will be up to SRL East Tunnels South construction manager Isolde Piet, who was the first female TBM pilot in the world.
Including the TBM operator, gantry and segment crane operators, grouters as well as support roles, this project will open up careers for a new generation of women, whereas it is due to be one of eight crews operating the four TBMs digging the SRL East twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley.
Considering that previous experience is not necessary for this work, expressions of Interest are now open for those keen to be part of this ground-breaking crew and women already working in construction and tunneling, women working in other industries and those at the start of their careers are also encouraged to apply as comprehensive training will be provided.
The Suburban Connect consortium is delivering the Tunnel South contract to build the 16km of twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley. The scheduled date for commencing the tunneling process for SRL East is 2026, and the all-women TBM crew is expected to be operating by 2027.
At least 10% of total labour hours on the Tunnels South works will be worked by women.
Providing connections to Melbourne’s east and south-east, SRL East will deliver six new underground stations between Cheltenham and Box Hill and its inauguration will be in 2035.
