The 5th International Underground Excavations Symposium and Exhibition, UYAK2023, will be set up in Istanbul on March 9-11, 2023. This will be with the partnership of the TMMOB Chamber of Mining Engineers Istanbul Branch and the Department of Rail Systems of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
The exhibition’s theme has been specified as “Cities of the Future, Urban Tunnelling and Underground Excavations.”
The International Underground Excavations Symposium, provoked by the Istanbul Branch of the Chamber of Mining Engineers of TMMOB relying on the beginning of the Istanbul Metro building excavations, was organized four times in 1994, 2007, 2013, and 2018 in parallel with the developments in metro and tunnel excavations.
UYAK Symposium, the first three of which were set up as the Underground Excavations in Transportation Symposium, was announced as the International Underground Excavations Symposium so that underground excavations contain diverse engineering projects like underground mining, water-wastewater, and dam tunnels plus metro tunnels.
The Turkish Tunnelling Society, ITA-International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, General Directorate of Highways, TMMOB, universities, and relevant public institutions have supported the the Symposium in different years.
The UYAK Symposium is a scientific and technical affair where public institution representatives, machinery-equipment manufacturers, municipalities, contractor companies and engineers gather to debate scientific and technological developments and matters associated with underground excavations, particularly tunnelling.
Invited speakers comprise the ITA president of Australia, Jamal Rostami (Colorado School of Mines), and Sanha Zlatanic (HNTB) of the United States.
