Following reaching the breakthroughs on Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s Phase IV in early June, the completion of Robbins’ tunneling scope under the DC‑07 package was marked.
Completion of the digging process from Airforce Station to Tughlakabad Railway Colony Station via Maa Anandmayee Marg Station was done by two 6.65m-diameter earth pressure balance TBMs.
Spanning a combined 3.456km tunnel, the twin TBM drives totalled 2,469 rings. While the path of drive 1 was between Airforce Station and Maa Anandmayee Marg with 2.65km long, Drive 2 was 791m between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlakabad Railway Colony.
Considering that thease journeys were beneath densely populated urban areas, they faced difficult logistics and challenging mixed-ground geology consisting of rock with gravel, sand, silt and clay, all with minimal surface impact.
According to Gaurav Singh Bisht, field service manager, Robbins India: “From launch to breakthrough, our focus was on delivering precision tunnelling with minimal surface disruption and maximum efficiency. Despite complex logistics and mixed ground conditions, both drives were completed on schedule with excellent performance.”
Once completing the tunneling phase for DC-07, Robbins is due to continue to assist Afcons Infrastructure Ltd during TBM dismantling and removal from the tunnels.
