Chennai Metro Rail completes Phase II’s longest drive

Following that the TBM Peacock (DL 1074), operated by ITD Cementation India Ltd, broke through to arrive at the Kodambakkam ramp retrieval shaft near Meenakshi College after completing the project’s longest drive during this week, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) is celebrating another breakthrough on its Phase II expansion project.

Stretching 26.8km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass, this achievement marks a major step forward in the development of Corridor 4, as CMRL says.

The date of commissioning TBM Peacock was May last year to dig the 2.047km section from Panagal Park Crossover to the retrieval shaft.

Passing beneath 190 buildings, that the majority were residential and more than 50 were old buildings, was the main challenge. Also before crossing the multiple railway tracks, the TBM had to bore parallel to an active railway line beneath two churches and the Kodambakkam flyover.

Including three corridors with 128 stations, Phase II is a 118.9km network, whereas corridor 4 is a 26.1km runs from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass with 12 underground stations and 18 elevated stations. Benefiting four TBMs, the 10.03km underground section from Lighthouse Station to Kodambakkam Flyover is being bored by ITD Cementation India Ltd.
