Super Sewer tunnel’s Connection Through the Blackfriars Site

Super sewer tunnel connects at Blackfriars site

Considering the excavation of the concrete plugs on either side of the shaft at Blackfriars Bridge Foreshore the coming step in the secondary lining process of the main super sewer tunnel has been commenced. The location where TBM Selina is boring the ultimate eastbound stretch towards Abbey Mills is the current connection place of all main tunnel’s sections.

In order to access the shaft bottom to install rails which will enable the secondary lining apparatus to cross the shaft on its way to the Chambers Wharf site in Bermondsey, the east and west plugs were removed by tunneling team in previous weekend.

As the Blackfriars shaft was excavated through the main tunnel, the portion beneath was filled with foam concrete to ensure the team wasn’t excavating into a void.

Without any require to hundreds of lorry journeys on London’s streets, almost 1,500 t of deleted grout material will be transported by barge on the River Thames.
