Using two Herrenknecht TBMs, each with a 6m diameter, the tunneling process is slated to be commenced on Metro Vancouver’s Broadway Subway Project. The intended TBMs are going to be commissioned separately from the Great Northern Way-Emily Carr Station and will excavate 5km to reach their destination at Cypress Street, near the future Arbutus Station.
While the Elsie TBM, which is named after Elsie MacGill, the first woman aeronautical engineer and professional aircraft designer in the world, is due to start tunneling first, current winter is the scheduled date for TBM Phyllis, named after nurse and mountaineer Phyllis Munday, to start the work.
The required time period for each TBM in order to dig the subway’s inbound and outbound tunnels is almost a year.
Following that the crews constructed the concrete base slab and assembled the conveyor system to transport the excavated material out of the tunnel, in preparation for the TBMs, tunnel liner rings, manufactured in Nanaimo, were transported to the construction site.
Meanwhile, work is advancing on the elevated guideway and station locations along the line, including relocating utilities, building traffic decks and excavation.
The contract for the project’s design and construction, has been awarded to Broadway Subway Project Corporation, an Acciona-Ghella joint venture.
Stretching from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus, the Broadway Subway is going to provide a 5.7km extension to the Millennium Line, whereas providing a SkyTrain service along the Broadway corridor. The determined date for inauguration of this project is 2025.
