Indicating the successful completion of two 6.3km tunnels, nine cross-passages, 12 headwalls for four underground stations and two emergency exit buildings, as well as construction of the launch shaft and Light Rail Transit portal, WestEnd Connectors’ scope of Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown West Extension has officially achieved substantial landmark.
Including Dragados Canada Inc, Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc, and Ghella Canada Ltd, WestEnd Connectors says all the structures were completed with over 1.9 million hours worked without a lost time injury.
The consortium also added:” The achievement was the result of outstanding collaboration, planning, and commitment from the WestEnd Connectors team, Metrolinx, Infrastructure Ontario, and all our partners, Aecon, FlatironDragados and Ghella, designers, Exp & Typsa, subcontractors and stakeholders.”
While digging process of the twin tunnels was up to TBMs Rexy and Renny during two years, they completed their drives on the western section last year.
As the largest subway expansion in Canadian history, Ontario is investing almost C$70bn (€45bn) in public transit over the next decade that is covering the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and the Yonge North Subway Extension.
Following completion, Toronto’s 9km Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is due to link seven new stations to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, making travel faster and more convenient, while bringing more than 37,500 people within a 10-minute walk of transit facilities.
