In order to develop the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line from the Western Sydney Aerotropolis to Glenfield, via Leppington, work will commence immediately on a business case.
Providing an additional transport option for one of Sydney’s fastest-growing regions, as well as linking the area to the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, will be the advantages of this project.
As the first step in bringing metro services to more communities in Greater Western Sydney, the business case is going to provide the design, economic assessment, and cost estimation to inform an investment decision for the construction of the extension.
The metro line between Western Sydney Aerotropolis and Leppington was identified as an initiative for investigation, while it is a part of the Future Transport Strategy 2056. In June 2020, Transport for NSW protected transport corridors in the Western Parkland City to enable this connection.
While the extension is due to continue the 23-kilometer Western Airport Line linking St Marys to the Aerotropolis, work on the first stage has started, with tunneling to begin by 2023.
The estimated date for completion of the Final Business Case is 2024 and its contents will determine how the extension will proceed.
Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.
