Some guidance of the London Power Tunnels 2 project and shares lessons from working during the Covid-19 pandemic, were revealed by Mott MacDonald senior engineer David Naylor.
While the intended 32.5km tunnel across south London is due to futureproof the energy network, Naylor illustrates the advancements so far, along with the highlights and challenges of the scheme.
The project will link several substations across the city and the cables will run through an underground tunnel network to minimize disconnection to residential communities and the traveling public when future maintenance and repair works are needed.
In order to implement essential cabling works, in September 2021 Balfour Beatty was opted by National Grid to deliver a £52M contract.
The contractor, which rendered the cabling works for the first phase of the project north of the Thames in 2017, currently is going to work to install 200km of 400kV cables within the tunnel network underneath Wimbledon and Crayford.
