Ventilation Shafts of Chiltern Tunnels in HS2

In accordance with Keltbray‘s announcement, which is a leading UK specialist engineering business, it has concluded a contract with a £12m value in order to extend its current C1 Shaft contract to present construction services for the next two ventilation shafts along HS2’s two giant tunnel drives through the Chiltern Hills, on behalf of the Align Joint Venture that is delivering the Central 1 (C1) portion of HS2 Phase 1. The announcement comes following the news that Keltbray secured the contract for the first two ventilation shafts on the project in August earlier this year.

Location of the next two shafts on the contract are at Amersham and Little Missenden while the digging process of the shaft in Amersham is due to be to a depth of 55m.

In order to create ventilation and emergency access to the tunnels Align with a ten-mile length that is boring beneath the Chiltern Hills, these shafts will be constructed. The whole area of services Keltbray will comprise of:

  • Reinforced concrete works at the base of the shafts, to create a collar structure to enable the TBMs to pass through the base of the shaft
  • Internal shaft construction works to build slip-formed concrete cores and lining walls
  • Excavation and substructure construction of Head House buildings

Linking the country, providing thousands of jobs, and rebalancing the UK economy, are the advantages of intended tunnels which are part of the HS2 network.
