On Oct. 19, China Communications Construction Company achieved the first significant milestone once the underwater tube on the left line, as a part of the 9.4km Bangabandhu Tunnel, was completed. Earlier in February 2019, the company has laid the groundwork for the construction of the 3.2km twin-tube tunnel.
Following this victory, the contractor will move forward with the second tube in November 2020.
Project Director (PD) Engineer Harunur Rashid Chowdhury said, “The total length of the proposed tunnel will be around 9.39 kilometers, including 3.32 kilometers of the main tunnel under the Karnaphuli River. It also includes an approach road of 4.89 kilometers alongside 740 meters of bridges.”
Once the project is delivered, the tunnel will cover the distance between the Chittagong and the Anowara Upazila, linking two sides of the Karnaphuli River. As a result, below mentioned improvements are possible to be accomplished by the deadline in 2022.
- Fewer traffic congestions on the two bridges crossing the Karnaphuli River better
- Faster connectivity between Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar
- Promotion of the country’s economic development
