Commencing MetroLink tunneling procurement

While the contract notices for MetroLink’s major civils packages have been released by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), package M401 Southern Section (Charlemont to Northwood) with €4.565bn value includes bored tunnels, tunnel portals, evacuation/intervention shafts and ventilation shafts; below ground station excavations at Charlemont, St Stephen’s Green, Tara Station, O’Connell, Mater, Glasnevin, Griffith Park, Collins Avenue, Ballymun, Northwood up to 35m deep, including shell and core structure; and ancillary civil and accommodation works.

The bored tunnels and portals, evacuation/intervention shafts; and stations, excavations and associated logistics, including Dardistown, Fosterstown, Swords Central, Seatown, and Estuary are the contents of Package M402 Northern Section M402 (Northwood to Estuary and this €3.347bn contract also covers the M50 viaduct, surface route (retained cut, cut and cover) and at-grade sections; Broadmeadow River Viaduct; Estuary Station Park and Ride Facility (site preparation); and preparation of the Dardistown Depot site and access road.

With the aim of encouraging innovation in low-carbon construction methods, materials, and logistics, these two contracts are due to incorporate a structured framework to meet carbon targets, an approach.

The prequalification stage for the M400 contracts will run concurrently, whereas the subsequent tender stage for each contract is going to be staggered, with the M401 contract tender stage starting first.

The chance of applying for one or both lots is available for bidders but can only be awarded one contract and TII will shortlist a maximum of four candidates and the contracts are reachable on the government’s eTenders and OJEU websites.

According to TII chief executive Lorcan O’Connor: “Issuing the pre-qualification questionnaires was an important milestone in the MetroLink journey.”

Stretching from Swords to Charlemont, MetroLink will comprise a high-capacity, high-frequency railway, with 16 new stations.

Providing an integrated public transport network for the Greater Dublin Area, it is slated to connect Dublin Airport, Irish Rail, DART, Dublin Bus and Luas services. As well as linking major transport hubs, MetroLink will link key destinations such as Ballymun, the Mater Hospital, the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin City University, and Trinity College Dublin.

The remarkable part of the 18.8km route will run underground.

In November last year TII began the procurement of a delivery partner for the project.
