Poland’s S19 Tunnel – Completing segment production

Being manufactured at the Acciona’s facility in Lutoryż, the segment production of all the tunnel for the over than 2km tunnel on Poland’s S19 Expressway has been completed by this company.

With the aim of reducing manufacturing time without compromising the strength or quality of the segments, Acciona used high-performance concrete (C50/60L and C60/75C) and modern steam-curing chambers and as manufacturing advanced, the segments were transported to the construction site.

Two parallel tubes are the contents of this tunnel and each has two lanes in each direction, an emergency lane, and 15 cross-passages.

Currently the final phase of excavation of the first tube is undergoing.

The number of precast segments in each tunnel ring is 10,whereas the lightest weighing almost 132 tons and the heaviest up to 152 tons.

Stretching from the Rzeszów Południe interchange to Babica in south-east Poland, the design and construction of a 10.3km section of the S19 Expressway was awarded to Acciona, in consortium with its Polish subsidiary Mostostal Warszawa,in 2020.

With around €500m value, this contract includes a 2.2km twin tunnel. As one of the most technologically advanced infrastructure projects in the country, the diameter of this refurbished TBM is just over 15m and is operating at a maximum depth of 70m.

The project also includes the construction of two technical buildings and a tunnel management centre.

While the contract of the second section of the expressway, between Domaradz and Iskrzynia was granted to Acciona in 2022,this contract, with an almost €226m budget covers the construction of a 12.5km dual carriageway, featuring two lanes in each direction and an emergency lane.
