BTS November lecture: Carbon management for metro projects

BTS’s November lecture’s concentration is due to be Copenhagen Metro’s ambition to reducing the carbon footprint of new construction.

Hence discussing around the use of active carbon management in the design of the new metro line M5 and the extension of line M4 in the Danish capital will be done by Metroselskabet’s carbon manager, Alun Thomas, and team leader for innovation, Jon Banyai.

Being defined by the most recently inaugurated lines in 2019 and 2024, Metroselskabet’s baseline is set as a current design approach in which there is no consideration of carbon. This organisation currently is applying a process of active carbon management in the design of the new lines and in other minor construction works.

As the larger project, M5’s status will be outlined by this presentation and it describe how Metroselskabet’s innovation program and carbon management have delivered significant improvements to the carbon footprint.

Considering his experience in all types of tunneling, from segmental linings to immersed tube tunnels, Alun Thomas is an accomplished tunnel designer and specialist in sustainability and has worked on many major projects worldwide such as Crossrail, Hong Kong metro, Delhi metro, Heathrow Terminal 5 and the Karahnjukar hydropower project. He has authored a book on sprayed concrete lined tunnels and more than 50 articles on a wide range of topics from numerical modelling to risk management.

As a technical expert in sustainability in tunneling, in particular life cycle analysis and carbon footprint calculations, carbon management and low carbon materials, Thomas is active in many industry bodies such as ITA WG 12 (Sprayed concrete), vice animateur from 2019-22; the ITA Sustainability group; ITAtech group on Low Carbon Concrete Linings; and past chairman of the ITAtech activity group for Precast Fibre Reinforced Concrete Segments.

He is also an active member of Engineers Without Borders, Denmark.

Being worked on all types of tunnels around the world, from pipejacks, sprayed concrete lined tunnels, and segmental linings to immersed tubes, Jon Banyai is an experienced tunnelling engineer and graduated from London’s UCL in 2001 and started his career in the UK as a consultant before relocating to Copenhagen in Denmark 15 years ago. He has worked on many major projects in the UK and abroad, including Heathrow Terminal 5, Crossrail, the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, and the Marieholm immersed tube tunnel in Sweden. Banyai has supported Copenhagen Metro on projects since 2012, for the M3 Cityringen, the M4 line, and now the future M5 line and the M4 extension.

He is also the ICE’s country representative for Denmark.

The Institution of Civil Engineers, 1 Great George St, London SW1P 3AA will host  this lecture at 18:00 (GMT) on November 20 and it is also going to be streamed live.
