Following that the first blast was fired on the eastbound section of Sotra Link’s Knarrvika tunnel just six months ago, breakthrough has been made in this project.
As the shortest of the four tunnels on the connection between Bergen and Sotra, the almost 650m-long Knarrvika twin tunnel stretches between Valaskiftet, at the landfall of the new Sotra Bridge and Arefjordpollen on Sotra. With cast-in-place portals at both ends, it is going to be 748m long when completed and breakthrough on the parallel westbound tunnel is expected soon.
In order to achieving breakthrough, the first tunnel required 176 blasts and around 366 in total will be used for both tunnels.
While the final breakthrough is due to be made before the end of the year, the latest achievement means breakthrough has been made on three of the four road tunnels on the new link.
According to Norwegian Public Roads Administration project manager Lene Sælen Rivenes: “Work on the Knarrvika Tunnel had gone well. The work on the tunnel has gone very well, and we are pleased to have achieved success in the third of four road tunnels on the Sotra Link. The tunnel team at Sotra Link Construction, which is responsible for the work, has done a great job.”
The total length of Sotra Link tunnels is 12.5km. The date of completing Kolltveit Tunnel was April 2024, whereas the Straume Tunnel was completed in June this year. The scheduled date for completing project’s longest tunnel, the 2km Drotningsvik Tunnel, is the autumn.
June 2027 is set to be the date of inaugurating the new road to traffic.
