The winner of contract for constructing a road and 1.5km tunnel in Chile’s capital city was OHLA.
This investment with €280m value awarded by Sociedad Concesionaria Autopista Central SA of the VíasChile Group for a major road infrastructure project between two of Santiago’s main urban corridors: General Velásquez and Américo Vespucio Norte.
Being located beneath Cerro Lo Ruiz, construction of a 1.5km twin-tube mined tunnel is the content of this project and it is due to feature two unidirectional tubes: the East tunnel (South-North), with two lanes along its entire length, and the West tunnel (North-South), which os going to begin with three lanes and then continue with two. Also, through modern viaducts both tunnels will link to the two main urban corridors.
Providing a new north-south connection from the General Velásquez corridor to the Américo Vespucio Norte highway, the works of this project will be carried out in three sections. While section A includes construction of a viaduct and other structures to link General Velásquez with the new tunnel, the twin-tube tunnel under the hill is in the section B and section C involves the execution of four viaducts on three levels to connect with the existing Vespucio Norte highway.
Almost 164,000m² of green, recreational areas will be created as part of a sustainable development approach, whereas in the municipality of Quilicura, a park will be built during the tunnel construction phase, while in the municipality of Renca two landmark parks are planned.
