HS2 Ltd – Balfour Beatty VINCI completes beam installation ahead of schedule

The process of installing  120 concrete beams on a 14,500-tonne box structure for the HS2 line beneath the A46 Kenilworth Bypass in Warwickshire, has been completed by international infrastructure group Balfour Beatty VINCI.

The date of achieving this landmark was ahead of schedule in 14 days, representing major progress in this engineering project and the beams, measuring 13 to 24m, were lifted into place using three giant cranes.

Eliminating up to two years of traffic management, this structure has been built on land adjacent to the A46 and the construction method decreases disruption while ensuring the safe and efficient completion of complex works.

Following installation of the beams, the next steps are completing the deck, the flat surface on top of the beams and installing parapets.

The date of moving this structure into its final position beneath the A46 using an advanced jacking system by Freyssinet will be in spring, whereas the system is due to move the box at 2.5m per hour over 64m.

According to National Highways network planner David Patmore: “We work closely with HS2 and its partners and welcome the innovative techniques being used to minimise disruption while delivering such a major, complex project. It’s good news that works are progressing so well, and we are grateful for drivers’ patience as the scheme moves towards the box push in spring.”

Additionally, advancing the preparatory works for the box push, the infrastructure group, in collaboration with National Highways and HS2, will close a section of the A46 between Festival Island (Coventry) and Thickthorn Island (Kenilworth) for two weekends in February.

With the aim of allowing engineers to upgrade safety barriers, adjust the central reservation, as well as complete drainage works, the closures will be done from 8 pm on 7-10 February and 8 pm on 14-17 February, while a full closure is scheduled for spring 2025.

Balfour Beatty VINCI project director John McNiffe said: “The safe and successful installation of 120 giant beams is another great achievement for the Balfour Beatty VINCI team delivering this box bridge slide in Warwickshire. This 14-day operation required extensive planning and precision, and I am incredibly proud of how the team rose to the challenge.”

Creating over  than 31,000 jobs, HS2 construction is advancing quickly between the West Midlands and London.

In the West Midlands, recent milestones include the completion of the first stage of a bridge over the M42 and the installation of two 159m steel spans for the River Cole Viaducts near Coleshill, North Warwickshire.
