Concourse B Project – Austin-Bergstrom airport secures $33m contract

In order to constructing a planned underground tunnel, which is also part of Concourse B project and is due to act as a crucial link between the new concourse and the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has concluded $33.27m funding with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill,  FAA’s $5bn Airport Terminal Program secures this funding.

Connecting the new concourse and the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal, the proposed underground tunnel’s span is 518ft and it is integral to the Concourse B development, facilitating efficient passenger movement and circulation, whereas involving essential infrastructure, including access routes, ventilation systems, and designated space for utilities and IT systems.

Additionally, the tunnel is designed to house the airport’s baggage handling system, ensuring a seamless connection between the terminals and enhancing overall operational efficiency.

With the aim of incorporating provisions for future developments, the tunnel design includes an Automated People Mover corridor to enhance transit within the airport, while this infrastructure is also going to allow for potential expansion to a new Concourse C as the airport continues to grow.

As part of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s Journey With AUS expansion plan, the Concourse B project will add at least 20 new gates to support additional airline operations, addressing the travel needs of the Central Texas region, and also the project will include spaces for dining, retail, and passenger amenities.

With corporation of airport teams and Page and Fentress joint venture, the Concourse B project is now in its initial design phase. The scheduled date for commencing the construction process is 2027, with the target opening date set for 2030, in line with the opening of the expanded terminal’s new Arrivals and Departures Hall.

Considering that already $47.52m of the Airport Terminal Program cost was up to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the airport also plans to continue applying for these competitive grants apart from using traditional financing methods, such as revenue bonds and future airport revenues, to support the development of Concourse B and other projects.
