Considering that the current road between the Fideris/Jenaz and Küblis/Dalvazza junctions is narrow and winding, with limited space shared by the Landquart riverbanks, the existing national road, and the Rhaetian Railway and slow-moving traffic travels through Fideris, and trains must reduce their speed to 45 km/h, the Swiss Federal Council approved the construction of the final 3.5 km stretch of the N28 on September 13, 2024.
Following completion, the aim is reserving the existing road for local traffic and slower mobility, while the newly constructed route is due to accommodate transit traffic. In order to helping stabilize timetables, a section of the Rhaetian Railway will be relocated into a 1.35 km tunnel, allowing trains to reach speeds of up to 120 km/h.
As regards that building the new road section requires the railway line to be moved into the mountains, the road and railway projects are closely interconnected and for ensuring proper synchronization and due to the complexity of coordinating these two projects, a joint approval process was initiated under the Federal Railways Act.
The scheduled date for commencing the construction process is 2027 at the earliest and the determined budget for this road project is €164.3 million (CHF 156 million), while the railway section is projected to cost €177.99 million (CHF 169 million).
