Italian Road Infrastructure Developments Underway

Italian Road Infrastructure

Significant road infrastructure developments are advancing in Italy and will improve the country’s transportation network.

The Italian Road corporation, ANAS, is inviting tenders worth €160 million in total for road safety advancements. The 16 separate lots will intend to stabilize slopes and embankments on routes in mountainous or coastal areas. In addition, contact nets and rockfall barriers are said to be installed, and environmental standards will be done in particular areas.

Moreover, ANAS is delivering a tender for €80 million of work for bridge monitoring work. This tender will be split into 16 separate lots as well. As reported, sophisticated monitoring technology will be installed, which will assist with optimizing maintenance.

Using the systems, ANAS will be able to carry out predictive maintenance on structures, decreasing the overall maintenance cost over the long term.

Another pivotal development is the endorsement of €400 million in funding from the EC that will be employed to boost the country’s trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T). A €350 million of this will be used for the 55km Brenner base rail tunnel, which is taking over €2 billion to build. In addition, funding will be delivered for the Rovereto Bypass.
