Tunneling on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Reaches Halfway Mark

ECWE Tunnel Launch Site Near Renforth Drive

Last week, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension marked another milestone.

The first TBM to begin tunnelling, also known as Renny, passed the halfway point, excavating more than three kilometers of the approximately six-kilometer tunnel.

The 9.2km extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will operate from the future Mount Dennis station to Renforth Drive and will run mostly underground.

When finished, it will build a continuous rapid transit line that stretches from Scarborough through midtown Toronto and into Mississauga.

Tunnelling began last April from the tunnel launch site close to Renforth Drive, with the TBMs making their way to the west of Scarlett Road, where the tunnel boring machines will emerge from underground.

The second machine, known as Rexy, is not far behind Renny. Since July, Rexy has tunneled 2.45 kilometers and marked the first headwall location at Martin Grove Road.

Follow the tunnel boring machine’s journey by using the tracker on the project website.
